As bars and restaurants reopen for indoor and outdoor dining across Scotland, we’ve sat down, virtually, with some of our suppliers to find out what they have been up to over the last year.

How does it feel to be back?

Stag Bites The Hog: Amazing! We are so excited for a fully packed Summer and to get out and about doing what we love to do. Equally feels like we have never been away/ that it’s been so so long since we got to speak to actual people face to face and serve up our grub at events

Bonnie Burrito: It feels great being back and on the road doing events. It’s been tough getting used to the fast pace again but we’ve really enjoyed it.

Both businesses gave back over lock-down by teaming up with great organisations like the NHS and The Kind Kitchen, delivering fantastic food to key workers and food banks across the country.

Did you offer many new services over the last year?

Stag Bites the Hog: We created assemble at home meal kits, meaning people could still get their Stag Bites The Hog Street food fix, which were a big hit and were able to be part of the Kind Kitchen which was a great initiative to feed people in need and keep our industry afloat.

The Kind Kitchen Initiative, created by AndMunch founder Vanessa Gilpin was a lifeline to various Glasgow foodbanks throughout 2020, read more about it in this Sunday Post Article.

Bonnie Burrito: We’ve been fortunate enough to keep our shop open the whole time but only through offering a takeaway/delivery service. We were also able to do a few small-sized weddings which was really nice. We offered a burrito for heroes deal throughout the first lockdown, where we delivered donated burritos to NHS and key workers. It was a way for us and our customers to say thanks to all those on the front line.

Find out how to register your business for a Blue Light Card and give back to our NHS front line workers in the future.

What are some changes you made to your business that you would like to keep as things get back to ‘normal’ this summer?

Stag Bites the Hog: We will hopefully still be able to offer limited edition meal kit drops for our local customers and UK wide deliveries.

Keep a look out on Stag Bites The Hog’s socials for those meal kit announcements, we’re sure they’ll sell out quick!

Bonnie Burrito: We have our own app which we felt was needed over lockdown. We will definitely be keeping this as it allows us to interact with our customers more. In the truck and the shop, we’ll continue to wear facemasks and provide hand sanitiser for everyone.

As businesses adapt and using new digital technology, we would like to hear what you, the readers, think. What innovative way have you seen businesses adapt? Let us know in the comments.

What post-lockdown advice would you give to people with small businesses such as yours?

Stag Bites the Hog: Just Enjoy it and try not to sweat the small stuff, there is always something to stress about but we have had enough stress this past year to last a lifetime – we all set up our wee businesses because it’s something we are passionate about. It’s been tough but fingers crossed a final end is in sight!

Bonnie Burrito: My advice would be to try not to let the last year and a bit put you down, even though it was of course very difficult. The general public are very good at getting behind small independent businesses when required and will continue to support you.
